Online Photo Course Synopsis

Below is a synopsis of what is covered under the different course packages:

BEGINNERS SLR CAMERA FUNCTIONALITY - TAKING PHOTOS OFF AUTO MODE

Do you generally take all your photos on auto mode and then are disappointed because the idea you had for your image was not captured in the photo?

The purpose of this set of notes is to explain what P, A, S, M on your camera’s dial means, when to use them and how to give you more control of the photos you take to ensure you get what you want.

So if you want to understand how to capture:
•	a moving object so it is crisp eg your child running in a school race, a waterfall so you can see the droplets of water, cars on a race track etc
•	a moving object so it looks blurred eg a waterfall so it appears white and silky
•	an image with the foreground in focus but the background out of focus eg autumn leaves on a tree with the background blurred so the leaves stand out, a person with the background out of focus,
•	an image with both the foreground and background in focus eg a person standing with a view behind them
then these are the notes for you!

BEGINNERS SLR CAMERA FUNCTIONALITY - LIGHT AND ITS EFFECT ON COLOUR

How often do you think it’s a fab day for photographing, the sun is shining, its lovely and warm and out you go with your camera only to be disappointed with the photos you have taken?

The purpose of this set of notes is to explain the different types of light and when to photograph in what light. Also it will explain the different functions under white balance and what they mean.

It is very easy to assume that it is a summer’s sunny day so you will get rich colours, beautiful blue sky and lovely shadows. This is not always the case. This course will explain why and what to look for to get those type of images. Also when is good to take black and white photos, photos of flowers, photos of people, how to avoid the yellow cast on your photos when taken inside etc.

BEGINNERS COMPACT CAMERA FUNCTIONALITY - TAKING PHOTOS OFF AUTO MODE

Do you generally take all your photos on auto mode and then disappointed because the idea you had for your image was not captured in the photo?

The purpose of this set of notes is to explain the various scenes you have on your camera, when to use them and how to give you more control of the photos you take to ensure you get what you want.

So if you have a number of scene modes on your camera and have never used them, here are some of the things you can capture:
•	a moving object so it is crisp eg you child running in a school race, a waterfall so you can see the droplets of water etc
•	a moving object so it looks blurred eg a waterfall so it appears white and silky
•	an image with the foreground in focus but the background out of focus eg autumn leaves on a tree with the background blurred so the leaves stand out, a person with the background out of focus,
•	an image with both the foreground and background in focus eg a person standing with a view behind them
and these notes will explain how to do this!

BEGINNERS COMPACT CAMERA FUNCTIONALITY - LIGHT AND ITS EFFECT ON COLOUR

These days cameras are pretty good at capturing photos under different lighting conditions eg outdoors, indoors, with flash, at night etc. However being able to understand the different light that occurs day to day will help to make an ordinary photo special.

Also when is good to take black and white photos, photos of flowers, photos of people, sunsets etc.

SLR AND COMPACT CAMERAS - COMPOSITION

There is no right or wrong way to take a photo but by applying a few composition guidelines can make the difference between an ok picture and a great one. These notes discuss what I think about when I am taking photos – things like rule of thirds, perspective with architecture, filling the frame, angle, leading the viewer’s eye through the photo etc. These guidelines and what you need to think about are different depending on whether you are taking colour or black and white images so the notes have been split to handle these subjects separately. These notes are a great list to take out with you when you next go out photographing to give you something to think about to improve your photography.

SLR AND COMPACT CAMERAS - CROPPING

So often when we look through photos we are disappointed that what was taken is not what was wanted. A great exercise to do is to look at the weaker images that you have taken and learn to crop them to really focus on the purpose of the picture. The more you do this, the more it becomes instinctive and then you start to do it when you actually take the photo which is much more beneficial. These notes give you some cropping ideas, advantages and disadvantages of cropping in the camera and on the computer and some exercises to get you to think about your images, their composition and cropping to achieve the eye catching image you are wanting.

INTERMEDIATE SLR CAMERA FUNCTIONALITY - PHOTOGRAPHING IN UNUSUAL LIGHTING CONDITIONS

On the beginners notes I have assume fairly easy lighting conditions with what I have covered. However this is often far from the case and so these notes discuss the functions on your camera that will help you to photograph in unusual lighting conditions. The functions include different metering modes, different focusing points, digital colour correction filters etc. The notes build on the beginner’s functionality techniques and assume you have a good grasp of these.

INTERMEDIATE SLR CAMERA FUNCTIONALITY - PHOTOGRAPHING WHITE

All cameras are set up to neutralize colour. This means that when photographing white, this actually comes out a little grey. However this depends on how much white there is in the photograph. These notes detail what to think about when photographing white be that at a wedding, snow scene or anything else which is white and also what functions to use to counteract the white eg exposure compensation, understanding light and white, use of grey card etc.
